La Fondation Cardiologique Princesse Lilian a été constituée le 10 décembre 1958 par la deuxième épouse du roi Léopold III. L'année auparavant, son fils le prince Alexandre avait dû subir une intervention chirurgicale à Boston. La princesse souhaitait offrir aux enfants atteints de malformations cardio-vasculaires, inopérables à l'époque en Belgique, la possibilité de bénéficier d'interventions d'avant-garde aux Etats-Unis. Parallèlement, la Fondation suscite le développement en Belgique d'une chirurgie cardio-vasculaire de pointe. Dès 1966, un conseil scientifique international est créé pour orienter ses activités.
